Bio and Interests: Rahla Kahn

Rahla Kahn was forced to become a visionary. With her weird name, Valentine’s Day as her birthday, and being voted “Most Original” in both junior high and high school, she couldn’t help but live a life outside of the box. In 1983 that rarified atmosphere brought together her love of acting and her interest in psychology when she created The Power of Play® and The Power of Play Approach®. Since that time, she has been teaching her message of creativity, humor, authenticity and hope through seminars in Los Angeles and around the country.

The New Orleans 100

This week I had lunch with a colleague who works at one of the most innovative and creative shops around today. One might assume that his agency is based here in nYc - but then you'd be wrong. Honest mistake though; New York City has probably more advertising/branding/creative studios per capita than any other city in the world. So if not in New York City where might this bastion of creative talent be simmering its brain cells to cook up the next hottest campaign? LA maybe?

While I wear several different professional hats (some quite striking and stylish), the one that spends the most time on my head belongs to the writer in me. With 25-years of multi-media experience, I have worked in a variety of fields. In my work with Writers of the Round Table, Inc. (www.writersoftheroundtable.com), I handle business develpment and co-write and ghost-write projects with our amazing, inspiring clients. I also mentor clients through the mind-bending, life-changing journey otherwise known as writing a book.

Taking it Viral

Web 2.0 apps allow ideas to spread at the speed of light, but how does that phenomenon work? How can new media be encouraged, supported or controlled? We are at the leading edge of a communications revolution that will define this era. Theories and observations are the key to understanding the digital universe.

Design Brief vs. Business Brief

The Design Brief, which states the parameters of a project in relation to the user/consumer, is a common document that guides designers through the process of product development. However, designers seldom have the opportunity to work in a broader context that offers more insight into the life of the product and its business aspects.

Is Narrowness Killing Innovation?

In recent years, education (and work) have tended to narrow. What do I mean by this? Simply that students are expected to develop particular specializations very early on and that this knowledge-narrowness (fuelled by curricula that are increasingly based on the vocational needs of employers) is carried through to the work environment. Once these ‘job-ready’ students are inside organizations they often narrow their thinking even further until they end up as intelligent idiots – people that know an awful lot about very little.
