I can't quite agree with Lynne that Microsoft is in a bad spot right now. Rather, I would argue that Microsoft is trying to be in too many markets simultaneously, which tends to spread itself thin and begins to lose focus on its core products.
Yahoo and Microsoft could put a damper on Google's momentum temporarily. If you knock Google down their following will only grow stronger. Google will emerge as the leader of web services and have a cult like following that Yahoo and Microsoft could only dream about. Google will deliver less and receive major praises while Yahoo and Microsoft will over deliver and hear crickets.
Microsoft doesn't exactly need Yahoo to save it. They can continue to rake in the billions selling their OS (Consider this, if you dont like Vista ... you can still buy XP). And the school of thought which believes that the Web would be the OS of the future is perhaps dreaming a tad too much, so Google can take Microsoft to the cleaners in the Search & Advertising market, but tough to see Microsoft's leadership in the OS & Office space being challenged in the next few years

Lynne d JohnsonI think both companies are sort of in a bad spot right now. Mainly it's because they both seemed to fall off in the innovation game.

If executed properly, Microsoft could save Yahoo.
