Not sure where to begin..

| posted by scott chappell

...since this is a new group.  So I'll start with the low hanging fruit.  The Mac Air.  I was enthusiastic about the launch of this machine. I'm not a designer, but I work in design and appreciate and use Apple products.  I did not need a pro machine.  But wanted a machine that would work easily with my airport and be portable.  I'm typing this on a VAIO that is 3 lbs and is of no use for design  but works quite well for my commute from New York to Montclair NJ where I live.  Last night my wife's iMac (she is a handbag designer which is low tech and ust needs email and internet) started acting weird so I thought we had an excuse to buy the new Air.  She could commute with it.  It would work well with our airport wireless connection.  Print wirelessly to our printer.  Perfect.  But then her computer started working well again so the excuse to drop $1800 was lost.

So to point.  What is the value of the Air? Who is it for?  I think it will do ok, but is a hobbyist accessory and nothing more.

I think there is a huge need for something like the Mac Air. I'm a graphic designer, so I need a really powerful, but portable computer. I loved my 12" PowerBook, but had to upgrade to a newer model with more power. I was sad when I found I could no longer get a 12" machine that would work for me, and had to get a 15" MacBook Pro. It works fine, but I would really like something smaller and lighter. Now I wish I could have waited six months for the Mac Air (isn't that always the story).

I see the appeal of the Air is a lot in how it looks, and the fact that its size and sleekness makes it even more portable. You can tuck it away in a brief case or portfolio very easily and not have to pack it in a separate bag. Being so streamlined and elegant there's an appeal for the female customer. I still use a 3-year-old MacBook Pro which is doing great. But it's not my main computer. I work on a G5 tower. When I do need to replace my MacBook, I'll probably choose the Air. Does it come in black yet?

The MacBook Air is an appealing machine visually, but after spending even a few minutes working on it, the responsiveness of the processor/bus and the weakness of the battery life are major dings in its overall usability. For checking email, surfing the Internet, and light typesetting, it's a fine machine and definitely top notch. If you're a designer that's dealing in heavy photography/video/audio assets for their daily trade, a MacBook Pro is a much smarter option and can bear much heavier lifting.
